Anyone forced to choose one word to sum up the Ivy League would use "excellence". And rightly so.
Another minimalist interpretation might be that it is a sporting conference set up by eight private higher-education institutions in the North East of the United States of America: Eight universities that challenge each other at sports varying from American football to fencing, from wrestling to rowing. Also correct.
But of course the Ivy League is much more than a sporting conference. Much more than a monument to academic excellence in everything from letters to medicine to nanotechnology.
It is about being part of an elite. With deep rooted Colonial origins, most of the universities that are part of it had been established long before the United States had gained independence from the British Empire.

Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Columbia, Brown, Dartmouth, Penn and Cornell. Their graduates were there at the creation of the United States, and have guided its course ever since, shaping its culture and its sense of itself.
But before they rise to lead in the boardroom or the cabinet, before they break new ground in the laboratory or the world of letters, they'll be forged in the playing fields, where coming in second is no consolation.

Se proprio si dovesse descrivere la Ivy League usando solo una parola, quella parola sarebbe "eccellenza". Giustamente.
Una seconda interpretazione altrettanto minimalista sarebbe: un torneo fra otto istituti di prestigio del Nord Est degli Stati Uniti, otto universita e collegi che si sfidano a sport come il football americano, a scherma, la lotta greco-romana, a canottaggio. Altretanto giusto.
Ma certamente la Ivy League e molto piu che un torneo universitario. Molto piu che un monumento dedicato all'eccellenza accademica, da letteratura a medicina fino alla nanotecnologia. Vuol dire appartenere all'elite. Con origini che risalgono all'America coloniale,la maggior parte delle universita che ne fanno parte furono fondate molto prima che gli Stati Uniti d'America conquistassero l'indipendenza dall'impero britannico.

Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Columbia, Brown, Dartmouth, Penn and Cornell. I loro studenti erano la quando gli Stati Uniti sono stati fondati e ne hanno determinato il loro corso da quel giorno, plasmandone la cultura e i suo senso di essere. Ma prima di trovarsi capotavola di qualche consiglio di amministrazione, al governo, o prima di primeggiare nel mondo delle scienze o della letteratura, questi ragazzi vengono forgiati sui campi sportivi dove arrivare secondi non viene considerato nemmeno come una magra consolazione.
